Creating a Christmas Feeling with an Old World Mantel

I have signs all around my house reminding me to simplify my life.  Obviously I forgot to look at any of them when I decorated my Christmas mantel.  It may seem paradoxical to have ornate decorations to celebrate the most humble of moments in history, but Christmas to me is more than a season---it is a feeling, a warm and abundant and glorious feeling.  Maybe Charles Dickens said it best in A Christmas Carol:

But I am sure that I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round... as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely.

I know that my mantel decorations won't make me any more kind or forgiving or charitable, but they will create that special Christmas feeling in my home.  I figure the spirit of Christmas will do the rest . . .

Happy holidays, and happy decorating!

  1. Beautiful! I feel I have stepped back into the Victorian era. I'm sure Dickens would feel right at home. ~ Maureen
