Little House on the Prairie: For the Love of Quilts

"There was no door and there were no windows.  There was no floor except the ground and no roof except the canvas.  But that house had good stout walls, and it would stay where it was. . . . Pa hung a quilt over the door hole.  The quilt would be better than no door."
~ Laura Ingalls Wilder, Little House on the Prairie

I just know that somewhere deep inside of me there is an excellent quilter waiting to get out.  However, every time I try to get in touch with my "patchwork" side, I create an embarrassing display of calico and stitches that looks as though I took a stab at piecing fabric together while under the influence of alcohol and a snug blindfold.  Making quilts: it's not my gift.  But I love them all the same.  Today I thought I would share some quilts with you in celebration of just how charming and versatile these textile treasures can be . . .

I was in a neighboring town when I passed by this adorable quilt shop store front.  I looked like a crazy woman as I swerved the curb, took a few snaps with my handy camera, and then stood for a moment and sighed happily at both of those American quilts.  Aren't they lovely!?

Quilts can take any bed from being "sleepy" to being "dreamy" . . .

But they are equally lovely on display outside of the bedroom, whether on racks . . .

 or in armoires.

Quilts aren't just beautiful; they are practical, too.  You can use them as headboards . . .

as pillows . . .

as chair pads . . .

as picnic blankets . . .

or as wall art.

Quilts can also inspire a world of ideas throughout your house, from graphic art design . . .

to patterned floors.

Even if you are a miserable quilter like me, I hope you'll still put your quilts on display.  There is magic in it.  Quilts can make any "little house" feel more like a "home."  Happy homemaking to you all . . .

  1. I just discovered your blog and I have been trying to sneak time to go back and read more of it. I also love books and the connections they have in our lives. I live in Utah and also went to the Parade of Homes and loved the bedroom you featured. My sister and I have a standing date every year. Thanks for the wit and insight you share in your writing. It is refreshing!

I am hoping when the girls get back in school that I will have the time to work on one! I am going to start with something small. . . maybe a pillow? We will see how it goes?

  4. Lovely post! The wall art pic is a great idea for if I ever find a great cutter quilt! I've had the same quilt hanging on the wall of every house I've lived in since 1994. It's sort of like our china shepherdess. :)

  6. Oh my goodness! I used to work there! Sort of. That quilt shop used to be in just one half of the building and The other half was an artisan bakery called Hearthstone bakery. I worked in the bakery during high school. I love love love that little quilt shop! I get a lot of my hand stiching patterns from there too. Thanks for posting that! It just made my day!

  9. Beautiful quilt eye candy. My grandmother was an avid quilter, so I grew up with them in every room. That generation tended to keep them in chests, but I love to use them in all kinds of ways.

  11. I also love quilts and am working on a denim square "quilt". I just don't think that I would have the patience to try to piece together something wonderful. I found my beautiful bed quilt at the Salvation Army and since then I stalk the place looking for more.....

  13. Hey, found your link at Savvy Southern - I am a quilt lover too, and I have made a few but, um, yeah, not all that great. If I went to that store you went by, I would be in serious financial trouble, take away my credit card please!!! Thanks for sharing all the beauty quilts, I pinned some of them to my Pinterest. 14. Ohhh I'm a big time quilt lover too and every time I see one it goes straight to my heart. My grandma's from Tennessee actually had quilting racks hung from their ceilings in their living rooms that would lower and raise as they quilted.

Very lovely !! I will have to show mine off someday too!

  17. To all of you who loves quilts, please give it a try. It can be something simple to get you started and you'll feel so accomplished when you make something yourself. Our guild has had several speakers this year that have won prizes at the big quilt shows. They started out not knowing how to even start a quilt and their work is amazing now.
