“If we shadows have offended,
Know but this and all is mended.
That you have but slumbered here,
While these visions did appear,
And this weak and idle theme,
No more yielding, but a dream.”
Know but this and all is mended.
That you have but slumbered here,
While these visions did appear,
And this weak and idle theme,
No more yielding, but a dream.”
~William Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night's Dream
I'm still not exactly sure how chromosomes and DNA work; I was too busy admiring the traits of a cute boy in Biology class to pay attention to such trifles. What I do know is that my oldest son is a genetic anomaly. As far as I can tell, NOT ONE of my genes made it to the final line up in his double helix. He is tall like his dad, not average like me. He has dark green eyes; I have blue. He has long finger toes. My toes look like dwarf Jimmy Dean sausage links. He can bend his wrist back and touch his arm. As for me, well, I can touch my thighs together when I walk, but it is nothing to gloat about.
My boy is simply his own man---one who loves all things science, all things math, and all things "geek."
Recently we remodeled my young brainiac's bedroom. While I would have loved to have decorated a sleeping space for him dripping in chalk paint and charm, he requested a sleek, modern, space-aged room. He wanted a place that reflected him, not the most recent Pottery Barn catalog. So I capitulated. Every bit of his room is a reflection of him---especially the dresser.
After spray-painting an old dresser orange, and adding the white stripes, we affixed vinyl numbers from the hardware store to the drawers.
Each drawer of his dresser has a significant "geek" number on it. Do you recognize any of them? Don't worry. We won't hold it against you if you do.
Accompanying the dresser in the room are an array of science fair medals, sudoku puzzles, and geometric origami sculptures. You won't find any uniforms or cleats or sports paraphernalia around. You see, I'm not raising an athlete. I'm raising a "mathlete".
So sweet dreams in your new room, my dearest, darlingest geek. May you forever live long and prosper . . .

What a good idea for your geeky son! I have three sons that fit this definition. They are grown now, but I would have loved to have done something like this dresser for them.
ReplyDeleteMy math 'geek' son would love this too! Even though it's all 'guy', can I still call it cute? (Visiting via Delightful Order)
ReplyDeletelol I did not know any of them! Math was never my thing still isn't but this dresser is wonderful! I love the color and the concept. I hope you'll come by Totally Transformed Tuesday and share. Hope to see you there! Peggy http://pjhdesignsoneofakind.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteI love the personal touch to the dresser--and, my FAVorite color is orange!
ReplyDeleteBtw---I just re-did that eXact same dresser-style! "Landen's dresser!"
I've never seen it before, so what a surprise to see yours!
Catherine
Absolutely stunning...

That is so cool! I have just discovered your lovely blog, and am now following you...♥♥
ReplyDeleteBest,
Anne
So brainy.... Great. I found this through Thriving on Thursdays. I have linked in a salad with leftover lamb. Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteThat is totally cool! I love it and I would use it in my house:) The only number I knew was pi - does that mean I'm not a brainiac? Most likely I'm not!! I think it's cool that you let him do his room the way he wanted - and that dresser is so cool I want to see the rest of his room!
ReplyDeleteSo cute. I love the orange color that you picked. I'm a huge fan or orange.
ReplyDeleteLove this--it's so personal. The color is amazing and I loved trying to figure out all the numbers. I got 2 so I am only a little bit of a geek. Fabulous idea!
ReplyDeleteFun. What a great and personal update to an older piece. Love the outcome. Thanks for sharing, liz
ReplyDeleteCame over from Overflowing expecting to see a dresser. but found a geek test. I scored three - knew pi right away, had to think a minute on the Fibonacci sequence, and everybody who is a fan should know 42! Love this idea for geeks of all ages!

The color is fab and the numbers look fantastic. If not for a "geek", you could use special dates or ages for a "sentimental" dresser. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is fabulous! What a unique idea for the "mathlete" of your family. He has a lot to brag about with this awesome dresser!
ReplyDeleteJust found you thru Farmhouse Porch and am your newest follower! I truly love this dresser-it's so unique!! Hope you visit and say hello :)

I'm jealous of your "matheletism", both you and your son. The dresser is too cool for words. You are a great mom to make him something so cool and personal.
ReplyDeleteLiz
That should be "mathleticism". :) Either way, it's a made up word but seemed appropriate since you have a "mathalete!"
DeleteEven math geeks need a place to put their socks! Love it.
ReplyDeleteBrainalicious!!! Love that orange too.

That is just the coolest thing. I would love to have that myself. Orange is my favorite color and I'm a retired middle school math teacher. Having said that, I only recognized pi and the Fibonacci Sequence, although I do understand why 081 are symmetrical, too.
ReplyDeleteThis is so cool!! I am hosting a giveaway at My Dream Canvas. A chance to win a 50 dollar gift card to HomeGoods. I would love for you to drop by :)Thanks Anu
ReplyDeleteI love it! Featuring you today! Xo, Aimee
ReplyDeleteI recognized a few of them, embarrassed to admit that 1701 was one of them:)

What an amazing dresser ... and what an amazing mom for ditching her own chalk paint dreams to create a space that make her son fulfill his own. Dreams that is ...
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing at our Crazy for Color link party!

That IS the perfect dresser for the math geek. I love the color combo you chose!! Thank you so much for linking up to our party! :)
ReplyDeleteGeeks are the new black! And that is one fabulous dresser - your son is one lucky brainiac!
ReplyDeletePinning this - so glad you came to our Color party!

Love this dresser! My oldest sounds a lot like yours. I know he'll know Pi, but I'm going to show him this tomorrow and see if he is an official geek or not. Great job creating something to perfectly suit your son :)
